Best place for camping in Oman
27 November 20241. Jebel Shams
Camping at the peak of Jebel Shams is an experience like no other! While it’s one of the more popular camping spots with locals, it’s still an incredibly beautiful and unique place to set up camp. I can’t think of a better way to end the day than watching the sunset over the vast mountain range, and waking up the next morning to a stunning sunrise from the other side – truly breathtaking.
There are several spots to camp on Jebel Shams, but I highly recommend the spot I stayed at. It’s a bit off the beaten track, so it’s not as crowded as some of the other campsites, and it’s right on the edge of Wadi Ghul, also known as the "Grand Canyon of the Middle East." The views from here are just incredible, especially at sunset when the canyon and mountains light up in golden hues.
One thing to note: Jebel Shams is only accessible via a dirt road, so a 4WD is essential to get to this spot. But the effort is totally worth it once you’re there. Whether you’re looking for solitude or simply want to enjoy the dramatic scenery, camping here is an unforgettable experience!
2. Sifa Beach
amping at Sifa Beach holds a special place in my heart. With the mountains on one side and the ocean on the other, it’s hard to beat the views here. The soft, powdery sand just adds to the charm of this place.
It’s only about an hour from Muscat, making it a perfect spot to start your trip. Camping on the beach is totally free, so you can park your car and set up camp anywhere. If you're comfortable driving on sand (and have the right vehicle), you can even drive right onto the beach and find a more secluded spot for your tent.
My favorite part of camping here was waking up early and going for a swim. The waves are gentle, and the atmosphere is so calm – it’s the perfect place to unwind and enjoy some peace and quiet by the water. If you’re looking for a relaxing beach camping experience, Sifa Beach is definitely a spot I recommend.
3. Bandar al Khairan Viewpoint
Bandar Al Khairan is hands down one of the most stunning camping spots I've been to. The viewpoint offers incredible views of the turquoise fjords stretching out into the Gulf of Oman, and it's surrounded by a network of trails that lead to secluded beaches. You can hike down to these hidden gems for a more private beach experience or just set up camp at the viewpoint for some epic sunrise and sunset views.
I decided to camp right at the viewpoint, and it was an unforgettable experience. The road to the viewpoint is paved, so even a 2WD car can get you there without any issues. However, if you want to explore the smaller beaches, a 4WD is ideal. Either way, it's a scenic spot that’s perfect for a peaceful getaway.
The location is just an hour from Muscat, making it a great option for a quick road trip. There's a small town below the viewpoint with a grocery store and a coffee shop, so if you don't feel like cooking, you can easily grab some supplies. It’s also a popular spot for locals to watch the sunset.
4. Pebble Beach
Pebble Beach is one of the most relaxing and beautiful campsites I’ve been to in Oman! The beach is so unique, with smooth, round pebbles covering the shore – they’re perfect for skipping across the water if you're in the mood. What really stood out for me was the magical bioluminescent plankton that lights up the rocks along the shoreline at night. It was an unforgettable sight!
The campsite itself is quite peaceful. There are rocky cliffs about 300 meters down the beach, which make for a great spot to pitch your tent and enjoy the view. Pebble Beach is also conveniently located just 5 minutes away from Wadi Sham, one of Oman’s most famous attractions. I recommend camping here the night before visiting Wadi Sham to get an early start and avoid the crowds – it’s the perfect base.
One thing to keep in mind when camping on a beach like this is the tides. Be sure to check the shoreline and pitch your tent at a safe distance to avoid any surprises in the morning – you don’t want to wake up in a puddle! But overall, this spot is a must for anyone looking for a serene camping experience near the coast.
5.Ras Al Hadd - Ras Al Jinz
If you’re a fan of wild camping and want to experience a quieter, more secluded side of Oman, this spot near Ras Al Hadd is perfect. The area is famous for turtle watching, especially at the Ras Al Jinz Turtle Reserve, which offers guided tours every night. But if you’d prefer a more peaceful experience away from the crowds, this hidden gem is a great alternative.
It’s a small stretch of sandy beach between Ras Al Hadd and Ras Al Jinz, rarely visited except by local fishermen and the occasional turtle. The tranquility here is unmatched, and you’re bound to feel like you have your own private piece of paradise.
Getting to this wild camping spot requires a 4WD – the "path" leading to it is more of a rugged, rocky trail with spiky stones, so make sure you have the right vehicle. But once you’re there, it’s worth the adventure. If you’re looking to enjoy some solitude and maybe even see a turtle or two, this is a fantastic camping experience!
